Untangling The Bones

about

This song was written for a performance of the story, Skeleton Woman, by the storytelling theatre company, Bone Song.

Skeleton Woman is an inuit myth story, collected by Clarissa Pinkola Estes in her book Women Who Run With The Wolves.

A lonely fisherman accidentally hooks a skeleton when fishing a little too close to the haunted bay. Terrified, he rows ashore as fast as he can but unbeknownst to him, she is tangled up in his fishing line and he drags her along behind him, as he runs home to his snowhut. But when he sees her tangled up in a heap by the light of his whale oil lamp, it touches a place of compassion in him, and he sings her this song as he untangles her bones.

lyrics

UNTANGLING THE BONES

Oh I know, I know, for I have felt as skinless as you are now
Oh, hush now, I know, for I have felt as broken as you look now

And I longed for someone to take me kindly in their hands, and I longed for someone to sing me gently in my ear, it’s alright, it’s alright sweet, sweet child, it’s alright

So would you let me take you in my hands, and with love reshape you as you were once, for there’s glory in these bones, I see it now, there’s grace and strength and beauty shining out, there’s glory in these bones, yes I see it now

And I long to be someone who’d take you kindly in my hands, and I long to be someone who’d sing you gently in your ear, it’s alright, it’s alright, sweet, sweet child, it’s alright
